Streetcars & Trolleys 2019 Calendar
Before automobiles and buses, there were streetcars or trolleys in virtually every American city. Streetcars & Trolleys 2019 recalls that era through historic photographs from around the United States. The 2019 calendar includes lines from El Paso, St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore, St. Petersburg, New York City, Scranton, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more.
Lines and locations in the 2019 calendar include:
El Paso City Lines PCC Car 1508 is at Third and Stanton, El Paso, Texas, on February 24, 1963.
Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin Car 460 is running as a Chicago local, eastbound on the Batavia Branch in February 1952. Car 460 was one of ten cars built in 1945 by the St. Louis Car Company. The last CAE passenger train operated on July 3, 1957, and freight service, such as it was, lasted another four years. Final abandonment of the entire line occurred in 1961.
Illinois Terminal Streamliner 301, without an observation car, is making a station stop at Staunton, Illinois, for the last time on March 3, 1956. Passenger service was suspended the next day. The St. Louis Car Company built three of these three-car Streamliners, and they delivered them in late 1948. Reduced to two cars as a cost-saving measure, their careers ended with the cessation of passenger service. All went to a scrapyard.

Speedrail Car 66 is coming out of the turnaround at Waukesha, Wisconsin, on May 30, 1951. The last Speedrail train operated exactly one month later. Terminating the service was prompted by a disastrous head-on collision on June 2, 1950, near Hales Corners, Wisconsin, which resulted in the deaths of ten railroad enthusiasts.
St. Petersburg Municipal Railway Car 112 is on the Gulfport Line, arriving at St. Petersburg, Florida, in June 1946.
New York’s Third Avenue Railroad System began in 1852 as a horsecar operation. Streetcars took over from horsecars, and in 1948 most systems converted to bus operations. All operations in Yonkers, New York, continued with streetcars until 1952, when the last segment converted to bus operations. On the fourth of July 1949, Cars 394 and 372 are meeting in Yonkers. They look worn out, but at this time, they still had three years to run. Note the gas pumps at the hotel on the right.
Scranton Transit Company Car 409 is on the Petersburg Line, traveling through downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1952. Scranton’s system opened in 1896, and the last car operated on December 18, 1954. The streetcar system was replaced by buses.
Baltimore Transit Company Car 5748 is inbound on the Ellicott City Line, crossing the Patapsco River in Ellicott City, Maryland, on September 20, 1953.
Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Northern Car 102 is backing into the tail of the Waterloo, Iowa, wye in June 1951. The close of operations was not far away. On October 31, 1954, the Waterloo car barn burned along with several cars, including Car 102, shown here.
Los Angeles Railway PCC Car 3133 is on the Pico Line near First and Clarence Avenue, Los Angeles, California, on October 2, 1951.
San Francisco Muni Cars 211 and 199 are meeting at Second and Cornwall, San Francisco, California, in December 1956. Car 211 has stopped here to allow Car 199 to drive past.
