Few things on the high seas are more dramatic than the great clouds of sail raised by traditional full-rigged ships. This edition of Tall Ships 2019 features 'America's Tall Ship' Eagle, the Chilean barquentine Esmeralda, the clipper-rigged Morgenster, the new Peruvian barque Union flying all the canvas in her locker, and more. More about the tall ships featured in the 2019 calendar include:

• Celebrating her centennial this year, Morgenster (Morning Star) was originally built as the Dutch herring lugger De Vrouw Maria in 1919

• Commissioned by the Brazilian Navy to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the country’s discovery by Portuguese Admiral Pedro Cabral, Cisne Branco (White Swan) was launched in 1999 at the Damen Shipyard in Amsterdam

• Sistership to the four-masted topsail schooner Juan Sebastián Elcano, commissioned by the Spanish navy in 1928, Esmeralda was launched in 1953 as the training ship of the Chilean navy

Christian Radich of Norway and Georg Stage of Denmark are at Tor Bay in England preparing for the 2017 Tall Ships Regatta

• The Dutch Wylde Swan credits her fast-running hull to the vessel’s first incarnation as a steam-driven “herring hunter” carrying the fresh catch to European markets with speed in the 1920s

• Tall ships Eagle (United States), Esmeralda (Chile), Europa (Netherlands) make sail during the American segment of the 2017 Tall Ships Regatta in Boston

• The second largest traditionally rigged sail training ship in the world, Kruzenshtern was originally one of the Flying P Line sisters christened Padua in 1926

• The only active sailing ship commissioned in U.S. military service, Eagle sails to ports around the world each summer

• One of the newest tall ships in the world, Shabab Oman II (Youth of Oman) is the training ship of the Royal Navy of Oman

• In 2000 England’s Jubilee Sailing Trust commissioned SV Tenacious, the largest wooden tall ship built there in 100 years

La Grace commemorates Augustine Herman, a Bohemian explorer, merchant and cartographer, who sailed his vessel, La Grace, from Amsterdam to New Amsterdam in 1640

• Unión serves the navy of Peru as a training ship, while serving the nation of Peru as an international ambassador
