About Nina Simone

Eunice Waymon was the sixth child of Black family from Tryon, NC with eight children. She realized that music was important to her and aspired to become a concert pianist. Local supporters helped her enroll at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Eventually, she began playing piano at a nightclub in Atlantic City, NJ. She adopted the name Nina Simone so that her family would not know that she was playing “cocktail piano.” She began singing to accompany her own playing and that led to a career as a jazz vocalist, and between 1958 and 1974, she recorded more than 40 albums. Her musical style combined classical, pop and gospel. Nina Simone died on April 21, 2003.
